Comeback

Within his own circle, Elvis’s spiritual search continued to meet with silent hostility from everyone. And Larry Geller experienced subtle but mounting pressure. He could practically feel the target on his back.

Resentful of Larry’s influence over Elvis, Colonel Parker often insinuated that he was a master hypnotist. Parker once sat down beside Geller at the film studio, handed him a booklet, and said he was making him a member of his club. The cover of the booklet depicted a snowman and was titled American Snowmen’s League. Inside was a table of contents indicating ways to “snow” people, but the body of the book consisted only of blank pages. Geller thanked him without appreciating the inside joke at the time. In hindsight he realized that the Colonel—the “Imperial Potentate” of the league—was acknowledging him as a fellow con artist and complimenting his abilities.

On another occasion, an acquaintance of the Colonel insisted that Geller have dinner with him. After an hour of small talk the man began to comment on how physically fit Geller appeared and how good he must look in swimming trunks. Then Geller felt the man’s hand on his thigh under the table. Geller kept his cool and politely turned down an offer to go swimming later. Mulling over the incident, he concluded that Parker had sent the man to check out his orientation. The Colonel had many times wondered out loud why Geller and Elvis spent so much time in the bathroom together with the door closed.

Then, one weekend, Parker essentially demanded that Geller and his wife and family drive to his home in Palm Springs for Sunday dinner. Geller had been invited before and had always managed to decline politely, but this time he thought it wise to comply. The visit itself went off uneventfully, except for one period when Parker took a telephone call while they were in the den together. Geller had the odd feeling that he was somehow the subject; at one point the Colonel glanced furtively in his direction. When Geller and his family arrived back home that evening, they discovered their house had been ransacked. Other than clothing, very little was missing except some audiotapes and numerological and astrological charts on Elvis.

After filming wrapped on Easy Come, Easy Go, Elvis took the entourage to Palm Springs for a weekend getaway. Geller went to use a spa at which Colonel Parker was a regular. When he gave his name the girl behind the desk said, with obvious excitement, “So you’re Larry. Colonel Parker told me about you. Is it true you’re a magician?”

And when Geller returned to his room from the spa, Elvis called, wanting to see him. Apparently suffering another bout of frustration, he said that while he seemed to be making progress on his own development, he wasn’t helping others the way he wanted to. He asked if Larry had any ideas about how he could accomplish his mission.

What appeared to be a heartfelt request was, in all likelihood, a devious trap laid by the Colonel.
